Construction Adds 19,000 Employees In September As Low Unemployment Drives Sector鈥檚 Largest Wage Increase For Hourly Workers In 40 Years

 

The construction industry added 19,000 employees in September as it boosted wages for hourly workers at the fastest rate in 40 years, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of new government data. Association officials said that even with the pay raises, many contractors are still having a difficult time finding qualified workers to hire.

鈥淐ontractors are raising pay faster than other sectors and are hiring more workers,鈥 said Ken Simonson, the association鈥檚 chief economist. 鈥淏ut job openings going into September were at record levels and the industry鈥檚 unemployment rate last month was close to an all-time low, suggesting that jobs will remain hard to fill.鈥
